According to principles:
Synchronous generator: It is the most commonly used type of generator, whose rotor (i.e. magnetic pole) is excited by DC current. During the rotation process, there is a constant magnetic tension between the rotor magnetic pole and the stator core. In modern power plants, synchronous generators dominate.
Asynchronous generator: It is not common, and its rotor speed is always slightly lower than the speed of the rotating magnetic field.
Single phase generator: A generator that outputs only one phase.
Three phase generator: A generator that outputs three phase differences, which is very common in modern power systems.
